As the United States approaches its midterm elections on November 3, attention is turning to a potential shift in the balance of power in Congress. Recent polls indicate a significant Democratic lead over Republicans alongside declining approval ratings for President Donald Trump. But will that advantage translate into a sweeping political shift in Washington, or will the results fall short of expectations?
Democrats Gain Ground as Trump’s Approval Ratings Decline
A CNN poll conducted with SSRS between October 15 and 18 showed Democrats leading Republicans by ten percentage points: 49% of registered voters supported the Democratic candidate in their congressional district, compared with 39% for the Republican candidate. Trump’s job approval rating fell to 32%. Independent voters favored Democrats by a 15-point margin.
Economic Concerns Dominate Voters’ Priorities
Economic conditions and the rising cost of living remain central to voters’ decisions. According to the poll, only 27% approved of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 23% approved of his approach to inflation. The election is therefore also a test of public confidence in the administration’s ability to improve living standards.
Will the Democratic Lead Become a Blue Wave?
Despite favorable indicators, declaring a blue wave may be premature. Midterm outcomes depend on individual congressional districts, where demographics, district boundaries and turnout are decisive. CNN’s survey found that 41% believed the country would be better off if Democrats won Congress, 37% thought it would be worse off, and 22% expected no difference. Dissatisfaction with Trump does not necessarily mean complete confidence in Democrats.
The House Appears More Accessible Than the Senate
Democrats appear better positioned to regain a House majority than to capture the Senate, where competitive races include states traditionally inclined toward Republicans. Winning both chambers remains possible but uncertain. High expectations could produce disappointment even if Democrats make meaningful gains.
What Could the Results Mean for Lebanon and the Middle East?
The significance of the midterms extends beyond domestic politics. A Democratic majority in one or both chambers could affect the Trump administration’s legislative and budgetary priorities and strengthen congressional oversight. For Lebanon, the elections matter because of Washington’s role in support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, foreign assistance, sanctions and regional policy. However, a change in congressional control would not automatically transform US policy toward Lebanon, since the president retains substantial foreign-policy authority.
A Decisive Final Stretch Before Election Day
With November 3 approaching, the midterms represent a major test for the Trump administration and an opportunity for Democrats to regain influence. Polls cannot determine results in advance: turnout, candidate performance in competitive districts and voter mobilization will shape the outcome. Will Washington see a sweeping political shift, or a new balance of power that constrains the administration without fundamentally changing US policy?
