A Rare Welcome for the Chinese President in Washington as Trade and Technology Take Center Stage in Talks with Trump
In a notable diplomatic gesture, U.S. President Donald Trump personally welcomed his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews upon his arrival in Washington, marking the start of a three-day state visit that once again puts relations between the world’s two largest economies in the spotlight.
It is unusual for a U.S. president to personally welcome a visiting head of state on the airport tarmac, as official welcoming ceremonies for foreign leaders are typically held at the White House. U.S. officials had previously confirmed that Trump would travel to Joint Base Andrews to personally greet the Chinese president.
Xi arrived in the United States for a visit running from September 23 to 25, his first trip to Washington in more than a decade. The visit also marks his second meeting with Trump this year.
White House Summit
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are set to welcome Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the White House on Thursday, where an official ceremony will include the playing of the two countries’ national anthems and a military review, followed by talks between the two leaders and a state dinner in the evening.
The significance of the visit extends beyond diplomatic protocol. It comes as Washington and Beijing seek to manage a wide range of disagreements while maintaining a degree of stability in bilateral relations.
Trade, Artificial Intelligence and Rare Earths
Trade is expected to top the agenda, including discussions over the future of the tariff truce between the two countries, technology restrictions and China’s access to advanced U.S. technologies. Rare earths, which are critical to the technology, energy and defense industries, are also expected to feature prominently in the talks.
Artificial intelligence is another key issue amid intensifying competition between the United States and China over advanced technologies. Taiwan, meanwhile, remains one of the most sensitive political issues in relations between the two countries. Beijing has said it intends to raise its concerns over U.S. arms sales to Taiwan during the talks.
Between the unusual airport welcome and the major economic and geopolitical issues on the agenda, Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington carries significance well beyond diplomatic ceremony, as the two sides seek to manage a strategic rivalry spanning trade and technology as well as security and international affairs.
