In a new initiative aimed at supporting medical students in Lebanon and strengthening ties between Lebanese medical professionals in the diaspora and the country’s academic sector, the American Lebanese Medical Association (ALMA) awarded scholarships to 40 outstanding medical students from medical schools across Lebanon as part of its 2026 program.

The scholarships were presented during ALMA’s annual conference, held this year in partnership with the Lebanese American University (LAU), as part of the association’s broader medical and academic activities in Lebanon. ALMA had previously announced that the conference would bring together healthcare leaders, academic institutions, and physicians to discuss the challenges facing Lebanon’s healthcare sector, its path toward recovery, and perspectives for the future.

Five AUB Medical Students Among the Awardees

Among the recipients of the ALMA Scholarship Award 2026 were five students from the Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut (AUB), according to a post published by the faculty.
The students are Housein Zeaiter, Dayan Hussein, Zeina Karam, Lynn Al Aridi, and Tamara Bou Hamdan.

AUB’s Faculty of Medicine noted that the annual award recognizes outstanding medical students for their academic excellence, dedication, and commitment to the medical profession.

ALMA’s support for AUB medical students is not new. AUB lists the ALMA Scholarship for Medical Students among its current scholarships. The scholarship was established by ALMA’s Houston Chapter in 2017 to support medical students with financial need.

Supporting Medical Schools Across Lebanon

ALMA’s initiative is not limited to a single university. The association announced that the 40 scholarship recipients were selected from medical schools across Lebanon, as part of its cooperation with the country’s medical universities.

The scholarships are part of ALMA’s broader efforts to support medical education in Lebanon. According to the association, it has provided financial support to Lebanon’s eight medical schools, in addition to supporting exchange programs, students and researchers, and organizing educational programs and conferences.
ALMA also states that it provided $40,000 in scholarships during the previous year.

From the Diaspora to Healthcare in Lebanon

The scholarship program coincided with ALMA’s 16th Medical Mission to Lebanon, organized during the summer of 2026 in cooperation with medical universities and partner organizations.

The mission included mobile clinics offering free medical consultations, examinations, and medications. Activities were held in several areas across Lebanon, including Bhamdoun, Ain Saadeh- Fanar, Ain Zhalta, Aqoura, as well as Deir el-Qamar, Ardeh, Amioun, and Zahle.

These initiatives highlight one aspect of the contribution made by Lebanese medical professionals in the United States to Lebanon’s healthcare and education sectors not only through medical missions, but also by investing in the next generation of physicians and supporting the continuity of medical education in the country.
