Central Bank of Lebanon Governor Karim Souaid announced that the total amount repaid to depositors by the end of 2026
is expected to reach approximately $8.1 billion, under the mechanisms currently in place to return part of bank deposits.
Souaid’s statement comes as the issue of deposits trapped in Lebanese banks since the onset of the financial crisis in 2019 remains one of the country’s most pressing economic and social challenges, amid ongoing efforts to address financial losses and restructure the banking sector.
The figures related to funds returned to depositors are particularly significant as discussions continue over the fate of bank deposits, especially with legislation and measures concerning the restructuring of the financial sector and the distribution of losses still under consideration.
