The U.S. Embassy in Beirut announced that the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors will meet in Washington next week as part of ongoing efforts to follow up on developments and advance the implementation of the trilateral framework between the two sides.
According to a U.S. State Department official, the upcoming Washington meeting will focus on current developments and continued implementation of the framework agreed upon in June. Meanwhile, the next round of formal Lebanese-Israeli talks, expected to take place in Rome, has been postponed until October.
The new round of negotiations had initially been scheduled for September in the Italian capital. The postponement comes amid scheduling considerations, including preparations for the United Nations General Assembly and other international commitments.
The Washington meeting comes within the broader U.S.-backed diplomatic process between Lebanon and Israel aimed at implementing the trilateral framework. According to U.S. officials, the process includes a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and efforts to address the issue of weapons, beginning with designated pilot zones.
Lebanon and Israel have held several rounds of U.S.-mediated talks in recent months, including meetings in Rome, as diplomatic efforts continue to address outstanding issues between the two sides.
