The Sixth National Gathering of Saint Charbel Communities was held in Poland under the patronage of Bishop Andrzej Siemieniewski, delegate of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, with the participation of Maronite Father Fabio M. Loutfi. The spiritual gathering focused on the challenges facing faith in the modern world and the need to return to a genuine and personal encounter with God.
During the gathering, Father Loutfi offered a reflection on contemporary spiritual life, warning of a paradox that believers may experience today: religious practices, activities, and spiritual content may multiply, while a deep and personal encounter with God can gradually fade into the background.
He highlighted three patterns that, he said, may distance believers even those actively involved in Church life and driven by good intentions from the heart of their relationship with Christ.
The first is the pursuit of an “impossible ideal,” in which spiritual life is presented as a set of standards that are so demanding they seem unattainable. This can lead to discouragement and eventually to giving up, rather than seeing prayer as a simple and sincere encounter with God in everyday life.
The second is becoming preoccupied with the things of God rather than with God Himself. This can happen through constant involvement in parish activities, prayers, initiatives, and service, without setting aside genuine time for a personal encounter with God. Father Loutfi noted that Church service and activities can gradually lose their essential meaning when this personal relationship is absent.
The third pattern he addressed was “talking about prayer instead of praying.” In an age marked by an abundance of religious and spiritual content, he raised the question of how much time people actually devote to simply being with God in silence, away from consuming or discussing spiritual content.
Against these challenges, Bishop Siemieniewski presented Saint Charbel as a model for returning to the essence of spiritual life. He recalled the long hours the Lebanese saint spent in silence before the tabernacle, emphasizing that this quiet and constant presence before Christ formed the foundation of his spiritual life.
