ضربت سيول مفاجئة وعنيفة أجزاء من منتزه غراند كانيون الوطني في ولاية أريزونا الأميركية، ما أدى إلى مقتل شخص وفقدان أو تعذر تحديد مكان نحو 15 آخرين، فيما تواصل فرق الإنقاذ عمليات البحث والإجلاء وسط مخاوف من هطول مزيد من الأمطار والعواصف الرعدية.
وبحسب إدارة المتنزهات الوطنية الأميركية، وقعت السيول بعد ظهر السبت 29 آب في منطقة Bright Angel Canyon وPhantom Ranch، بعدما تسببت الأمطار الغزيرة بارتفاع سريع للمياه وتحولها إلى سيول جارفة حملت معها صخوراً ضخمة وهياكل معدنية وحطاماً باتجاه نهر كولورادو.
وأعلنت السلطات انتشال جثة رجل يبلغ من العمر 46 عاماً بالقرب من Crystal Rapids على نهر كولورادو مساء الأحد، في حين تعمل فرق الإنقاذ على تحديد أماكن نحو 15 شخصاً لا يزالون في عداد المفقودين أو غير المعروف مكانهم.
وتم إجلاء أكثر من 60 شخصاً من المناطق المتضررة، بعضهم بواسطة المروحيات، بينما طلبت السلطات من أي شخص يملك معلومات عن متنزهين أو مخيمين كانوا موجودين على طول ممر Bright Angel Creek وقت وقوع السيول التواصل مع إدارة المتنزه.
وتسببت قوة المياه بأضرار كبيرة في البنية التحتية داخل غراند كانيون، إذ دُمرت معظم جسور المشاة التي تعبر Bright Angel Creek، كما تضرر خط المياه الرئيسي الذي يزوّد السياح ونحو 1600 من سكان Grand Canyon Village بالمياه. وأدى ذلك إلى وقف الإقامة الليلية في فنادق المتنزه اعتباراً من الاثنين، مع مطالبة السكان بترشيد استهلاك المياه.
وأُغلقت Phantom Ranch وBright Angel Campground وأجزاء من North Kaibab Trail حتى إشعار آخر، كما تأثرت حركة القوارب في نهر كولورادو بسبب الحطام الذي حملته السيول.
وقال خبراء الأرصاد إن ما بين نحو 1 و2.5 سنتيمتر من الأمطار هطل خلال قرابة 30 دقيقة في منطقة شديدة الانحدار، ما أدى إلى جريان معظم المياه بسرعة كبيرة نحو الوادي. ولا تزال احتمالات هطول المزيد من الأمطار والعواصف الرعدية قائمة في المنطقة.
وفي مناطق أخرى من أريزونا، أصدر مكتب الأرصاد الجوية في فينيكس تحذيرات من سيول مفاجئة في أجزاء من مقاطعة ماريكوبا بعد هطول أمطار غزيرة، محذراً من فيضانات قد تطال الطرق والمناطق المنخفضة ومجاري المياه.
Powerful flash floods have swept through parts of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, leaving one person dead and around 15 people missing or unaccounted for, as search and rescue operations continue amid concerns over additional rainfall and thunderstorms.
According to the U.S. National Park Service, the flooding struck Saturday afternoon, August 29, in the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas after heavy rainfall caused water levels to rise rapidly. The rushing floodwaters carried large rocks, metal structures and debris toward the Colorado River.
Authorities said the body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River on Sunday evening, while rescue teams continued efforts to locate around 15 people whose whereabouts remained unknown.
More than 60 people were evacuated from affected areas, some by helicopter. Authorities also asked anyone with information about hikers or campers who may have been along Bright Angel Creek when the flooding occurred to contact park officials.
The floods caused significant damage to infrastructure across the Grand Canyon. Most pedestrian bridges crossing Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, while the main water pipeline serving tourists and approximately 1,600 residents of Grand Canyon Village was also damaged.
As a result, overnight lodging at park hotels was suspended beginning Monday, while residents were urged to conserve water. Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and sections of the North Kaibab Trail were closed until further notice. Debris carried by the floodwaters also affected boating activity along the Colorado River.
Weather experts said approximately 1 to 2.5 centimeters of rain fell within about 30 minutes over the steep terrain, causing water to rush rapidly into the canyon. Additional rain and thunderstorms remained possible in the area.
Elsewhere in Arizona, weather authorities in Phoenix issued flash-flood warnings for parts of Maricopa County following heavy rainfall, warning of possible flooding on roads, low-lying areas and waterways.
