Not everything built within the Lebanese diaspora can be measured by social media followers or what appears in online posts. Behind some initiatives lies a broad network of relationships and expertise accumulated over many years before taking shape as a formal institution. That was my impression after meeting Bill Maadarani, Founder of the American Foundation on Lebanon (AFOL).

From Relationships to an Institution

Although AFOL was officially launched only recently, it is built upon years of relationships and experience established by its team in both the United States and Lebanon. Throughout 2026, the organization has become increasingly visible through humanitarian initiatives and field projects. Behind these efforts, however, lies a broader vision and an extensive network of partnerships developed over many years with American and Lebanese institutions, as well as influential figures from both the public and private sectors. This foundation provides AFOL with a strong platform for launching larger and more sustainable initiatives.

Working Between Washington and Lebanon

Speaking to DiasporaEcho, Maadarani explained that one of AFOL's greatest strengths is its ability to operate simultaneously in Washington and Lebanon. This allows the organization to connect American policymakers with realities on the ground in Lebanon, provide firsthand insight into the needs of local communities, and transform the relationships it has built in the United States into meaningful projects and partnerships that benefit Lebanon.

Since its establishment, AFOL has sought to build an American platform dedicated to supporting Lebanon not merely by responding to crises, but by developing long-term partnerships in humanitarian assistance, development, economic recovery, and reconstruction. According to Maadarani, the organization's vision is rooted in the belief that Lebanon needs sustainable solutions addressing the root causes of its challenges rather than temporary initiatives that end once a crisis subsides.

Donors: More Than Financial Supporters

Maadarani notes that AFOL's projects are funded through contributions from donors and partners across the United States. However, their role extends far beyond financial support. They also contribute professional expertise, investment networks, business relationships, and strategic partnerships that help create projects with lasting impact throughout Lebanon.

A Humanitarian Presence in Southern Lebanon

On the ground, AFOL has worked in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces and local partners to carry out humanitarian missions across southern Lebanon. These efforts have helped deliver assistance to thousands of beneficiaries, provide fuel supplies, and restore essential medical equipment in hospitals, ensuring the continuity of healthcare services in affected communities.

The organization also assisted in the safe evacuation of journalists who had become trapped behind conflict lines, highlighting the importance of effective field coordination in ensuring the success of humanitarian operations.

Engaging American Decision-Makers

AFOL's work extends beyond humanitarian operations into policymaking circles in Washington, D.C.

Maadarani explained that the organization maintains regular communication with Members of Congress and their staff, positioning itself as a practical, nonpartisan resource providing accurate, field-based information about developments in Lebanon. This helps policymakers gain a realistic understanding of conditions on the ground while supporting policies that promote stability, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery, and stronger U.S. Lebanon relations.

AFOL also continues expanding its network of cooperation with American institutions, including the U.S. Department of State, Members and staff of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, congressional committees focused on foreign affairs, national security, and international development, as well as organizations dedicated to development, investment, and stabilization, including USAID (where applicable), the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Small Business Administration (SBA), and other institutions that can help strengthen cooperation between the United States and Lebanon.

The Diaspora as a Partner in Reconstruction

Maadarani believes that the Lebanese-American community represents one of Lebanon's greatest strategic assets. For this reason, AFOL seeks to bring together Lebanese-American leaders from business, academia, healthcare, philanthropy, and civil society, believing that the diaspora possesses the expertise, resources, and international relationships needed to strengthen institutions, encourage investment, and create sustainable opportunities for future generations.

In this context, building bridges between the United States and Lebanon goes beyond diplomacy. It means creating practical partnerships between American and Lebanese institutions, encouraging responsible private investment, promoting academic and professional exchanges, strengthening humanitarian cooperation, and connecting Lebanese-American business leaders, professionals, and experts with opportunities to contribute to Lebanon's recovery and long-term growth.

A Vision Beyond Crisis Response

Maadarani emphasizes that humanitarian assistance represents only one part of AFOL's broader mission.

The organization is equally focused on education, workforce development, healthcare initiatives, entrepreneurship, private sector growth, diaspora investment, sustainable economic development, dialogue, and building lasting partnerships among American and Lebanese institutions, universities, businesses, and charitable organizations, believing that meaningful change is achieved through long-term collaboration.

"Our goal isn't simply to help Lebanon recover from one crisis," Maadarani says. "Our goal is to build lasting partnerships between Americans and Lebanese that will strengthen both countries for generations to come."

He also emphasizes that AFOL welcomes partnerships with universities, hospitals, embassies, public and private institutions, nonprofit organizations, charitable foundations, and any organization that shares its commitment to building long-term cooperation between Lebanon and the United States.

More Than a Newly Established Organization

What I took away from this conversation is that AFOL is not starting from scratch. Rather, it is building upon years of relationships and experience accumulated by its team in both the United States and Lebanon. The organization's official launch therefore represents not the beginning of its work, but the beginning of a new chapter dedicated to organizing those relationships into broader initiatives with greater and more lasting impact.

If AFOL succeeds in transforming this vision into sustainable programs and long-term partnerships bringing together universities, hospitals, embassies, institutions, and both the public and private sectors in the United States and Lebanon, it has the potential to become one of the leading Lebanese diaspora organizations supporting Lebanon's reconstruction while strengthening a U.S.Lebanon partnership whose impact can extend for generations.
